TORONTO — Here is your first look at The Live Room Sessions video for “Wasteland” by South Carolina-based rock band NEEDTOBREATHE.

It was recorded earlier this year at L.A. studio Ocean Way Recordings, where artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra and Radiohead have performed.

The song is featured on the trio’s fifth album, Rivers In the Wasteland.

“We were originally going to title the new record Wasteland,” explained Bear Rinehart, lead vocalist and guitarist. “At that time it really represented where we were as a band.”

The members of NEEDTOBREATHE — Bear, his brother Bo, and Seth Bolt — had struggled to stay together while spending more than two years on the road following the release of 2011’s The Reckoning.

At the same time they were considering pulling the plug on the band, the Rinehart brothers were writing new songs.

The title of the new album changed, Bear said, when he and Bo “reached a place of hope in our relationships with each other.”

Rivers In the Wasteland came from Isaiah 43:19 (the Rineharts are the sons of a pastor).

“It no longer felt right to call it Wasteland,” Bear said. “The record is biographical in that way that it followed our journey. That was where we started and that is why it is the first track.”

The group stripped down its sound for Rivers In the Wasteland, using almost entirely live takes on the album.

Rivers In the Wasteland debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 200 and at No. 6 in Canada.

They band is on tour again, playing throughout the U.S. until he end of September.

The song “Wasteland” is, Bear said, “definitely one of my favourite songs on the new record.”
